Another NEW Grain Free flavour

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

The rise and rise in popularity of the grain-free foods for pets (see our previous post “Grain Free – safety in numbers“) has again been validated with the launch of another flavour to the Earthborn Holistic range.

Meadow Feast is a grain free, LAMB based diet for dogs that’s packed full of vegetables and fruit to ensure a protein rich, balanced diet.  It’s also gluten-free and high in Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids to ensure high energy and the development of lean muscle mass.

Without sounding like a broken record, a grain-free diet seems to be the answer for dogs suffering allergy issues. Things such as itchy skin, hot spots, yeast problems in ears and sensitive stomachs are a very common issue . Thankfully a grain-free diet seem to be combating these issues. A simple diet of real protein sources (ie; salmon, bison, chicken, lamb, etc) balanced with a non grain carbohydrate such as potatoes or sweet potatoes seem to be giving relief to dogs suffering allergy issues.

So, if your dog (or cat) suffers from various allergies, maybe a grain free diet is the answer? Have a chat to your Vet first though and read the labels on the products. Some products can be quite high in fat and protein which may suit some dogs but not all. With the variety of different formulas on offer these days though, the protein & fat levels vary so we’re pretty sure you’ll find one that will suit your pet perfectly.

As always, give us a call if you have any queries. We’re more than happy to talk through the various grain-free ranges with you.

Innova, EVO Grain Free & California Natural ARE BACK IN STOCK

Monday, July 30th, 2012

We’ve put  the ‘out of stock’ sign away because new shipments of Innova, EVO Grain Free & California Natural have finally arrived.

I guess its testament to the high demand for these uber-quality brands that put them out of stock in the first place. And it possibly took the importer by surprise but stocks are now back in abundance.

If you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, here’s a quick summary of what’s so good about these popular North American pet food brands:

Innova – uber-premium pet food made from farm-fresh ingredients from the five main food groups. Premium, natural & holistic nutrition.

EVO Grain Free – Not just high protein, grain free food but low carb as well. Extreme nutrition for your pet producing strong, lean bodies without sacrificing energy levels. Just as nature intended.

California Natural – pure & simple nutrition using only one protein ingredient – no fillers, no chemicals, no additives.

The science of pet nutrition = Nutrience

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

Pet nutrition has come a long way in the last decade. But I guess it’s not just restricted to pets! The whole western world has gone crazy over anything to do with nutrition, exercise, organics, obesity, beauty, quality ingredients, cooking and so on. But back to pets for a moment.

Pet nutrition is a serious issue. We go back to our argument that you wouldn’t feed your kids a fast food diet every day so why would you give it to your dog? The health benefits are virtually non-existent.

So, have a look at the ingredients in your pet’s food. Is it full of fillers, by-products, glutens and artificial colours & flavours? If so, it might be time to have a think about changing their diet.

A brand you might consider is Nutrience. They take pet nutrition very seriously. Originating in Canada, Nutrience has blended nutrition and science (hence the name!) to create a food for your dog or cat that has ‘no bad anything’ in it!  That means no by-products, no fillers, no added glutens, no artificial colours.

A lot of people ask us ‘what are the fillers?’ We like this excerpt from Nutrience’s website: “Fillers are not dangerous, but are virtually useless ingredients in a food. They pass right through your pet, giving him very little nutrition. Fillers bulk up a food and help your pet feel satisfied after a meal, but since they contribute less to his nutrition than quality ingredients, he will need to eat a bigger portion of the food to meet his caloric and nutrient requirements. He eats more, you buy more; you are both better off buying and consuming less of a higher-quality food. Eating large volumes of food containing fillers also means more clean-up in the backyard! Nutrience foods do not contain fillers, and instead choose high-quality ingredients for its formulas.”

Many, many brands on the market include fillers. Again, have a look at the ingredients list on the back of your pet’s food packaging. If it contains fillers, you might want to think again about buying it next time.

So, now we know the non-benefit of fillers, it’s important to consider your pet’s nutrition seriously. If you want to see your pet in tip-top health, consider what you’re feeding them and think about the ingredients.

Perhaps it’s time you looked at Nutrience – at least you’d then know that you’re only feeding your pet the healthiest and most nutritious ingredients.

The rise and rise of natural pet food

Monday, April 30th, 2012

It was only five years ago that super premium brands like Eukanuba, Hills Science Diet and Advance were the leaders in the pet food industry with their dry, ‘healthy’ pet food formulas. They were heralded by the Vet industry as the healthy alternative to wet, gravy-rich brands such as Pal and the like.  How things have changed!

Now there’s loads of new kids on the block and they’re taking the pet food world by storm with their all-natural formulas. Pet owners have realised that the ‘you are what you eat’ philosophy applies to pets as well as humans! Subsequently, food that contains no chemicals, no artificial colours or flavours but does contain a host of all-natural ingredients is high on their shopping list.

We recently listened to a presentation by a U.S. manufacturer of pet foods who said they’ve been amazed at the rise in sales of all-natural pet food. They commented that “Today’s consumers want to feed their pets like family and even, to a greater and greater extent, like people. Consequently, natural pet food is taking the market by storm”. We liken this to believing that most people wouldn’t eat a fast-food diet (aka McDonalds/KFC) every day, so why would you give it to your pet?

When we started Pookinuk about four years ago, the pet food products available were a drop in the ocean compared to what’s available now. The expansion in the list of all-natural brands goes on forever …. Earthborn Holistic, Artemis, Holistic Select, Black Hawk, California Natural, Innova, Evo, Canidae, Eagle Pack, K9 Natural, Taste of the Wild, Dr Bruce’s Vets All Natural, Organix and Ziwi Peak … and it’s still expanding.

Furthermore, the science of pet nutrition has advanced in such a way that even these all-natural formulas are becoming specialised. The various protein & carbohydrate sources on offer (eg. Chicken & brown rice/Whitefish & sweet potatoes/Salmon & potato/Lamb & rice) are formulated in various amounts to suit different breeds of canines and felines based on their energy needs. Completely grain-free formulas are also becoming more popular. But that’s a whole different ball game …..

Royal Canin produces food to suit all breeds

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Do you have a Golden Retriever, Boxer or Cavalier King Charles or perhaps you have a SiamesePersian or Maine Coon breed of cat?  Whatever your breed, Royal Canin produces a food to complement the breed’s characteristics.

Take for example the Golden Retriever. Full of energy, Golden Retriever’s always give their utmost. Sweet, affectionate, patient… their calm nature makes for an ideal companion for children. Brave, enduring, blessed with legendary flair and an outstanding memory, they have always proved great loyalty to their owners.

Royal Canin’s food for Golden Retrievers focuses on four main areas inherent to the breed:-
 - Maintaining the glory of a beautiful coat
- A rather sensitive skin
- A tendency to gain weight
- Supporting cardiac function
An example from Royal Canin’s breed specific range

Their other breed specific foods do the same. Check out the Royal Canin website – it’s very interesting reading (the link to the breed specific foods is on the right hand side of their home page).

If they don’t produce a food specific for your breed, they also produce foods designed specifically for different size dogs & cats. Check out their range of dog foods for Mini Breed, Medium Breed, Maxi Breed & Giant Breeds here.  To see their varied range of cat foods for Kittens, Adults, Indoor & Outdoor cats, click here.  And they also produce a Pharmaceutical range.

You can buy Royal Canin dog and cat food formulas from Pookinuk and for this month only, we’ll send you a free food storage bin!  Offer also available on Royal Canin’s Pharmaceutical range!
